Good News and Bad News of 2009

When I look back at 2009, I wonder how any of us in the recruiting business, or the financial services business, or the advertising business, or the............(you fill in the blanks) survived!

The Good News and the Bad News

There were months when we had no search activity at all. Let's admit it, it was an almost eerie silence in the market place...which most of us have never experienced before.

The bad news: The quietness of our business didn't feel like a recession; it felt like an earthquake that wouldn't stop.

There was constant cash crunch where companies were slow in paying as business dwindled to half of what it had been the year before.

The good news: There was time to think and to be creative. We were not able to exclusively work in retained search. We had to expand our services, so our creative juices started flowing and now we are off to the races!
•  We completed a new website and expanded our product line.
•  We strengthened our systems and cleaned up our data.
•  We developed strategic partnerships to support expanded services and we have some exciting new ideas for our business on the drawing board.
•  We cut costs to maintain a highly effective and flexible staff

I believe that each of you reading this was impacted in some way by the upheaval of the past year. We were all in this together, and in a strange sort of way, it feels to me that we are more connected and closer than before.

There are five daily practices I believe were the secret to my survival for many months. I share them with you.
1.  I accepted the fact that I had more questions than answers and learned to live with uncertainty.
2.  I disciplined my mind to stay present rather than wandering into the land of "what ifs".
3.  I became a great listener to other people's pain and suffering.
4.  Rather than emailing all the time, I got back on the phone and talked with people one on one so as to connect.
5.  I utilized a wide variety of daily affirmations and stopped listening to negative news.
